Spanish Club Offers Weekly Glimpse into Hispanic and Latino Cultures during Hispanic Heritage Month
By Ariana A. ’26, Co-head of Spanish Club
Started in 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15.
During the month, we recognize the historical impacts and achievements Hispanics and Latinos have made that are used to inspire future generations. Recognizing the importance of Hispanic heritage inspires many communities to continue building a more inclusive and prosperous future for the United States.
Since September 15, Spanish Club has presented at every Morning Meeting and has spoken about:
- Latino actors and their contributions to the entertainment industry,
- exploring the diversity and countries represented here at Foxcroft,
- celebrating the Independence Day of Central and Latin American countries,
- and acknowledging the world’s largest record-breaking pupusa, which was cooked in Washington, DC!
The club also created an advisory activity based on this year’s banquet theme; we asked the students and faculty “What do you hold dear and close to your heart?” and to write their responses on a paper heart. Some of the responses were: my family, my friends, and Foxcroft.
For the last week of presenting, we are talking about women in STEAM to acknowledge their achievements that have paved the way; encouraging young girls to take on professions in the STEAM fields. We will also talk about our fundraiser under the organization Just World International, where we will sell empanadas at Foxcroft and donate the proceeds to education, healthcare, and nutrition programs in Guatemala and Honduras. The purpose of this fundraiser is to show the importance of education and to end the cycle of poverty in these countries.
On October 14, we are hosting a Hispanic Heritage Banquet to close the month, which will include speeches and performances by students to share their cultural backgrounds with the school community based on this year’s theme “Te Llevo en mi corazón” which means "I carry you in my heart."
The Spanish Club leaders and members are very excited to share their heritage with Foxcroft so stay tuned for the first banquet of the year!
